We come together today to celebrate the life of John "Sonny" Herbert, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who left us peacefully on February 27, 2024, at the age of 88, due to natural causes. John was a lifelong resident of Brooklyn, New York, until his final years in Indian Trail, North Carolina, where he passed away surrounded by the love and warmth of his family.
Born on June 24, 1935, in Brooklyn, NY, to the late John Abern and Lottie Pearl, John grew up in a bustling household that was filled with love and laughter. Though his sisters, Dorothy Johnson, Emma Ballard, and Gladys Oliver, and his brother, Leonard Hubbard, preceded him in death, the bond they shared during their lifetime remains an indelible part of his legacy.
John's education was rooted in the New York City public school system, which provided a strong foundation for his later accomplishments. His dedication to his work was evident in his long and respected career with the Borden’s Diary Co and NYC Transit Authority, where he retired after more than 25 years of service. His commitment extended beyond his professional life as he was an active member of various associations throughout his life, contributing to the community and forming lasting friendships.
He is lovingly remembered by his seven children: Delia Hughes and her husband, (Franko-deceased), of Columbia, SC; Keith Herbert and his wife, Nadine, of Bowie, Maryland; Darren Herbert and his wife, Debra, of Brooklyn, NY (children of ex-wife Ruby Herbert); Phyllis Warren of Brooklyn, NY(daughter of Hattie Warren); Rochelle Warren and her husband, Darrell, of Charlotte, NC; Gerald Warren and his wife, Keewana, of Charlotte, NC(children of Rose Warren); and Terrance Herbert of Indian Trail, NC(son of Barbara Paige). John's legacy includes a remarkable 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren(1 deceased), a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his special friend Hattie Cleveland who will carry forward the cherished memories and lessons he imparted.
John's interests were as diverse as they were passionate. He had an eye for capturing moments as an avid photographer and videographer, preserving memories for generations to come. His love for genealogy was more than a hobby; it was a journey into the past, weaving the story of his family's history and leaving a treasure trove of knowledge for his descendants.
Those who knew John would describe him as loving, kind, and funny—a man whose humor and warmth brought joy to every gathering. His laughter was infectious, his kindness boundless, and his love for his family was the cornerstone of his life.
John's life was a testament to the power of positivity and the importance of family. He navigated the ups and downs of life with grace and humor, and his resilience was an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
As we say goodbye to John "Sonny" Herbert, we do so with gratitude for the time we shared with him. His spirit, stories, and the echoes of his laughter will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were touched by his generous soul. Though he may no longer be with us in body, his influence and the love he spread will continue to ripple through the lives of those who knew him. John's journey on this earth may have concluded, but his story etched in the memories and lives of his loved ones will never end.
